Thomas Holloway, the Victorian entrepreneur, established Royal Holloway as a college for women at a time when the education of women was a controversial topic. Queen Victoria opened Royal Holloway in 1886, and allowed the use of Royal in the College’s name.The university has a long history of working with communities and schools in Surrey and beyond, notably through hosting an annual family Science Open Day since 1986.
