When you receive a deadline, work backwards to create a plan:
Write down your deadline on a piece of paper and write a list of tasks you need to do in the lead up to the deadline. For example, any background reading you need to do, drafts to be handed in, independent reading you need to do.
Once you have all the tasks written, then you can start to create a timeline of when you need to complete the different tasks by.
